A Blast From The Past...
As members of the class of '77, we were witnesses to events that our children and grandchildren will read about in history books. We watched world events on television as they were happening, with no idea of the impact they would have on us.

We were there the FIRST time...
Smiley faces and tie-dye

Halter tops and platform shoes

Red, white, and blue...everything!

Peace signs and 'flower power'

Cateye and plastic rimmed glasses

Mood rings

The VW Beetle

Alex Haley's "Roots" on television

Star Trek,
Star Wars,
and the Godfather

Hip huggers,
bell bottoms, and
'capri pants'
(weren't they called
'pedal pushers'?)

  National and World News
We saw the Viet Nam war come to an end and watched when the President made the announcement on national television. We saw the reports of the Watergate Scandal, watched as Richard Nixon gave his resignation speech, and were proud to have Grand Rapids native Gerald Ford as our new President. We joined the rest of the nation as our great country celebrated it's Bicentennial. We watched as Billie Jean King defeated Bobby Riggs in the tennis match of the century, watched Mark Spritz break Olympic records in swimming, and everyone knew that Cassius Clay was the greatest! We witnessed the protests surrounding the Roe vs. Wade decision, the Kent State Killings, and watched as President Carter pardoned draft resisters. We saw the Space Shuttle make it's first 'piggy-back' ride atop a Boeing 747, and the Orient Express make it's last trip. We were horrified as details were released about the 'incident' at Three Mile Island, Legionaires Disease, and the massive New York City blackout.

Minimum wage was $2.30, a gallon of milk was $1.09, gas was only 35.9 cents a gallon, basic phone service was $7.00 a month, 45s were 65 cents and LPs $4.99, a pack of smokes was only 60 cents, candy bars went from 15 to 20 cents, and a $100.00 'beater' was a pretty good car!!
